Empowering Indigenous Voices: Net Zero Atlantic x IBM Collaboration
In the pursuit of environmental conservation and the preservation of Indigenous cultures, the Mi'kmaq people have stood as stewards of the land for thousands of years in what Western culture designates as Nova Scotia, Quebec, and New Brunswick. However, in contemporary times, these Indigenous lands face the threat of energy projects, emphasizing the necessity for Indigenous voices to be integral in the decision-making process.
Enter Net Zero Atlantic (NZA) and IBM, uniting their efforts to develop an innovative solution – the ACES Lite digital tool. This interactive platform aims to showcase the environmental and socioeconomic impacts of potential energy systems futures for Indigenous Protected and Conserved Areas (IPCAs) in Nova Scotia. Leveraging IBM technology, including the IBM Environmental Intelligence Suite and IBM Cloud, the tool promises user-friendly interfaces, local relevance, time efficiency, and compelling visualizations.
The primary objective of this collaborative endeavor is to empower Indigenous communities in steering the decision-making process regarding the placement of future energy infrastructure. By providing comprehensive insights into potential impacts, the ACES Lite tool facilitates informed and community-centric choices. This project represents a significant stride towards sustainability, recognizing the importance of respecting both the environment and the cultural heritage of the Mi'kmaq people.
As we embark on this journey with Net Zero Atlantic and IBM, we celebrate the union of technology, environmental consciousness, and Indigenous wisdom – an alliance committed to fostering a harmonious and sustainable future for us all.
